Can Dogs Eat Avocado? Benefits and Risks of Avocado for Dogs

Can Dogs Eat Avocado? If you’ve understood that you need to cut avocados for your dog to eat, you ‘ve heard of conflicting information online about whether avocados are safe for dogs, read on!

Avocados are one of the most sophisticated health foods on the market. They have been described as a nutritious and delicious snack for humans, but what about our four-legged friends? Can dogs eat avocado?

The answer is yes and no. Avocados contain a fungicide toxin called persin, which can cause serious health problems in many animals – even death.

According to veterinarians, dogs are more resistant to persin than other animals, but this does not mean that avocados are 100% safe for your dog to eat.

    So do dogs have avocados?

Dogs can eat avocado meat without problems if they like it. The reason some people say not to give avocados to dogs is that avocados are known to contain a toxin called persin, which is very dangerous to other animals such as horses and birds but is not actually harmful to dogs.

Avocados have the highest concentrations of persin in their leaves, thick skin and pits; Avocado meat is low in this chemical – it is very low in most humans, and even in most dogs.

We do not eat avocado leaves, skin or pits, so do not give them to your dog. A few thin slices, or a nutrient-rich treat at your dog’s dinner, is good for your dog, unless he has a food allergy.

If you live in the right environment and have access to avocado trees, your property, neighbors’ property or community outside, you already know about dog tolerance towards fruits.

Dogs munch happily on avocados, usually avoiding skin and pits on their own (both parts are very rough and rough, and do not taste very good).

This does not mean that you should scarf them without supervising your avocado eating dog. Avocado pits can put dogs at risk of severe oking and some may try to chew or swallow them.

Even if you know that your dog will only try to eat avocado meat, you should still limit the amount of avocado available to your dog.

Most avocados can cause gastrointestinal upset in dogs (and in people) – vomiting, diarrhea or sometimes both. An avocado is good for a medium-sized dog, but two or three a day? That’s a lot of avocados for the dog.

Remember the nutritious makeup of avocados. A medium sized avocado has about 320 calories and 29 grams of fat. Yes, it is “good” fat, but it’s still fat, which should count towards your dog’s daily nutrient intake.

Therefore, dogs that need to lose weight, or have pancreatitis, should not eat avocados (consult your vet as usual).

    Commercial Avocado Dog Food

What about avocado dog food? A growing number of pet food companies are marketing avocado oil and avocado meals as healthy components in their dog and cat foods.

Avocado oil or avocado meal (avocado “meal” is dried and ground avocado meat) contains persin and is completely safe for both dogs.

Is Avocado Dog Food Healthier Than Other High-Quality Packaged Dog Food?

As with any commercial dog food, you should feed your dog a product and see his response within a few days or weeks to make sure the avocado based dog food is right for your dog. If you notice any diarrhea, vomiting, itching or other adverse reactions, switch back to the food he previously ate without any adverse reaction. But keep in mind that avocado may not have been in the diet that caused his reaction; Avocado oil or meals usually contain a low percentage of ingredients in the diet.
